Grey’s Anatomy is currently one of the longest-running television shows out there, with its 17th season still going strong. The show made its debut in 2005 and was a smash hit with fans and critics alike. It remains ABC’s most popular drama.
On the latest episode of the 17th season, Patrick Dempsey’s iconic character Derek made his surprise return on the show in a dream sequence with Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith. The two reunited on the beach in wedding attire, in what was certainly a fanservice moment for many. Derek ultimately convinced her to wake up from her coronavirus hallucination to return to her kids.
While speaking to Variety, Patrick Dempsey said that the return was beautiful.
“I thought it was a beautiful way to close it. The intention was to really give people some hope because they are such an iconic couple.”
We’ve lost so many people this year, the thought that we’d have angels hovering around us taking care of us is a good message to send out in such a bleak world that we’re living in. So for all of us, it was a beautiful ending to this story. I’m so grateful that I did it and happy that the fans really loved it.”
Dempsey also hinted at a possible appearance in the show’s future when asked if he would return one day.
“Who knows? Never say never with this show, right? I’m glad we did it this year.”
Showrunner Krista Vernoff had previously revealed that she is planning the ending for the 17th season in such a way, that it could either be a series finale or a season finale. We will have to see how the ending will turn out to be.
