El Chapo is one of the world’s most infamous criminals. He’s currently serving a life sentence for his role in running a violent drug cartel. Now, his wife is headed for her own term behind bars.

Emma Coronel Aispuro was given three years in prison for her role in the El Chapo’s trafficking operation. According to TMZ, it’s significantly less than people expected her to get. Many believed she’d have to serve a sentence of ten years or more.

Prosecutors agreed to a lighter sentence because she cooperated with the investigation. As part of a plea deal, she then spilled the beans about her criminal husband. There was no binding agreement, but things seem to have worked out in Emma’s favor.

After serving her initial three years, Coronel will be under supervised release for four additional years. She will have to pay $1.5 million in restitution for property taken during her crimes. It’s still a stiff punishment, but not what one would expect.

Emma was arrested at the Dulles Airport outside of Washington, DC earlier this year. She pled guilty to charges of money laundering and conspiracy to distribute narcotics. The arrest included charges for cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and methamphetamine.

El Chapo twice escaped the confines of Mexican maximum-security prisons. He is currently housed in a US Federal Supermax prison in Colorado. There, he sits in solitary confinement inside a 7×12 foot concrete cell.
