Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, caused a scene outside a Pennsylvania courthouse this week, reportedly because he didn’t have legal representation at the time. According to his attorney, Thomas Dickey, Mangione’s outburst was fueled by frustration over the accusations and his lack of immediate legal support.
During his extradition hearing on Tuesday in Blair County, Pennsylvania, Mangione was seen in an orange jumpsuit with his hands cuffed behind his back. While being escorted by police, he shouted at reporters, delivering a cryptic statement: “Completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience!”
Speaking to Erin Burnett on CNN, Dickey explained that Mangione was “irritated” and “agitated” because he had no legal representation until he reached the courtroom. Dickey added that his client calmed down significantly after securing his services. Video footage showed Mangione looking composed as he left the courthouse following the hearing.
Mangione is charged with fatally shooting Thompson on a Manhattan street last week, allegedly stemming from grievances with the healthcare system. During his Tuesday hearing, Mangione refused extradition to New York to face charges, including murder. For now, he remains held without bail in a Pennsylvania detention center as legal proceedings continue.
