Full House star Dave Coulier has opened up about his recent health battle, revealing that he’s been diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The beloved comedian and actor, best known for playing Joey Gladstone from 1987 to 1995 and reprising the role in Fuller House, shared his “roller coaster” experience on the Today show on Wednesday.

Coulier recalled the moment he received the news, saying, “[I was] feeling like I got punched in the stomach because it never happens to you. You always hear about it happening to someone else.”

The first sign of trouble came when he noticed a lump in his groin, prompting further testing that left him “on pins and needles” as he waited to hear if the cancer had spread to any major organs, his blood, or bones.

In an emotional conversation with his wife, Melissa Coulier, Dave prepared himself for the worst. “I’m OK with whatever the news [is] going to be no matter how devastating. … I’ve had an incredible life. I’ve had the most amazing people in my life. This has been an extraordinary journey, and I’m OK if this is the end of the journey,” he said.

Fortunately, doctors informed him that the cancer was confined to his lymphatic system, giving him hope for effective treatment.

Coulier has since begun chemotherapy, a process he described as “intense” and one that “scared the daylights” out of him. Despite the grueling treatments, he remains hopeful and realistic. “There [are] days where I feel unbelievable,” he noted. “Then there’s other days where … I’m just going to lay down and let this be what it’s going to be.”

He is expected to complete six rounds of chemo, with his final treatment set for February of next year.

The actor acknowledged that while his diagnosis initially didn’t “sound great,” the curability rate of his type of cancer is promising. This optimism is shared by his wife, Melissa, whom he’s been married to since 2014. Dave is also the father of his 33-year-old son, Luc, whom he shares with his first wife, Jane Modean.

Coulier’s fight against cancer comes nearly two years after the Full House cast mourned the loss of Bob Saget, who died at age 65 in January 2022. At the time, Coulier honored his late co-star with a heartfelt tweet, writing, “My heart is broken. I love you, Bob. Your forever brother, Dave.”
