Legendary West Coast DJ Nasty Nes is in the fight of his life after suffering a heart attack over the weekend.

The hip-hop community was shaken by the news, first reported by HitsDoubleDaily on November 9, which included details of a GoFundMe campaign launched to support his recovery. Known as “Crazy Pony,” Nasty Nes (real name Nes Rodriguez) is currently battling multiple serious health issues, including kidney failure and pneumonia.

“His recovery will necessitate extensive physical therapy, as well as a wheelchair or scooter for mobility, specialized rehabilitation and rest,” the GoFundMe description reads, underscoring the immense financial strain his medical care is placing on his family. The campaign calls attention to the broader issue of inadequate health insurance coverage for musicians, with Damion “Damizza” Young emphasizing in a video statement, “This is exactly why we need insurance for our artists, producers, and DJs. We need insurance for artists … and that’s what we’re working on.”

Nasty Nes’ legacy in hip-hop is unparalleled. He has played an instrumental role in shaping West Coast rap culture through his groundbreaking radio work and as the founder of RapAttackLives, a platform dedicated to spotlighting both emerging and established hip-hop artists. He also launched FreshTracks, the first all-rap radio program on the West Coast, which helped propel the careers of many artists, including Sir Mix-A-Lot. Their collaboration led to the success of the iconic single “Baby Got Back,” a track that has transcended generations and been sampled by artists like Nicki Minaj and Gucci Mane.
