Lil Wayne isn’t headlining this season’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, but the NFL has found another spotlight for the rap legend.
The NFL recently announced that Weezy will be joining their NFL GameDay Morning show as a weekly guest, bringing his die-hard football enthusiasm to the network. The hip-hop star will break down weekly matchups alongside the show’s power-packed lineup, including Rich Eisen, Kurt Warner, and Gerald McCoy, as well as NFL insiders like Ian Rapoport and Cynthia Frelund.
Known for his passionate takes on sports, Lil Wayne’s new gig is a dream job for a guy who’s been vocal about his love for the game. His football fandom is well-documented: since 2009, when he collaborated with ESPN Magazine, to his 2016 banger “No Mercy” becoming the theme for Skip and Shannon: Undisputed. He’s even guest-starred on the show, throwing around hot takes about his beloved Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Lakers. However, Wayne has sparked his share of controversy, including backlash for an “All Lives Matter” comment during an appearance.
Lil Wayne recently got about feeling overlooked. In an Instagram video following his new NFL gig announcement, he admitted, “That hurt. Hurt a lot. You know what I’m talking about? It hurt a whole lot. And for just automatically mentally putting myself in that position like somebody had told me that was my position.” The moment touched his fans, showing just how deep his passion for football goes.
During his recent Lil Weezyana Fest, Weezy addressed his Super Bowl dream after reuniting with the Hot Boys, saying, “I said to myself, ‘I want to be onstage for the Super Bowl one day, in front of my mom… And I worked my a* off to get that f*kin’ position. It was ripped away from me.’” New Orleans honored the rap icon with the Key to the City and two official days dedicated to him—a testament to the love the city holds for one of its own.
Lil Wayne’s step into the NFL media realm marks yet another chapter in his storied career and shows that he’s not done pushing for his place in football culture.
