Laverne Cox is voicing serious concerns as Donald Trump’s campaign gains momentum, especially with its sharp anti-trans rhetoric.
In a revealing interview with Variety, the Orange Is the New Black star shared that the anxiety surrounding another Trump presidency is so severe that she and several of her trans friends are considering relocating outside of the United States.
“We’re doing research on different cities in Europe and in the Caribbean,” Cox revealed, noting that she’s not alone in her search for safer ground, as other members of the LGBTQ+ community are also exploring options for relocation.
Cox didn’t shy away from drawing historical parallels, comparing the current climate to Weimar Germany: “There was this thriving community of queer people in Berlin pre the rise of Nazism. They attacked Jewish folks. They attacked immigrants, they attacked queer and trans people,” she explained.
Acknowledging her public profile, Cox admitted that being in the spotlight makes her feel even more vulnerable. “I don’t want to be in too much fear, but I’m scared. As a public figure, with all my privilege, I’m scared, and I’m particularly scared because I’m a public figure. I feel like I could be targeted,” she said, emphasizing the real stakes involved. “I think they spent close to $100 million on anti-trans ads. It’s deeply concerning.”
Cox’s candid reflections underscore the palpable worry within the LGBTQ+ community about the direction the country could take if Trump were to regain office.
