Grey’s Anatomy is currently one of the longest-running television shows out there, with its 19th season still going strong. The show made its debut in 2005 and was a smash hit with fans and critics alike. It remains ABC’s most popular drama and can be attributed to Ellen Pompeo. However, she exited the show during the mid-season finale and now it seems Pompeo is not done with the show.
Throughout its duration, the show has featured several characters being killed off or actors leaving the show. “Grey’s Anatomy” enthusiasts are aware that the absence of Ellen Pompeo’s character, Meredith Grey, will change the show irreversibly. Nonetheless, the beloved medical drama orchestrated a farewell that was fittingly poignant and served as an ideal send-off for her character.
According to Variety, viewers have seen a lot less of Dr. Grey in season 19 as she got busy with her obligations in a forthcoming Hulu show, which still remains untitled. In fact, she left the show on its Feb. 23 episode.
While speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Grey’s Anatomy executive producer Debbie Allen, who also plays Catherine Fox, talked about Ellen Pompeo’s status in the show. She made it clear that Meredith Grey is not done with the show.
“A lot of people have a lot to say. You know, Meredith Grey is taking a journey to another direction, [but] she’s still alive. She’ll still be coming back to the show. But she is definitely taking a departure. The truth is, it’s not her last episode. [She’s] leaving Grey Sloan [Memorial Hospital], not ‘Grey’s Anatomy.'”
Allen said that it’s “a big deal for all of us not to have her on set [every day] like normal,” adding, “But she’s there. I mean, she’s still buying food trucks for the crew. She’s still coming to judge bake-offs, she’s still our number one on the call sheet. Despite her absence on-screen, Pompeo will continue to serve as one of the show’s executive producers. We’ll have to see when Meredith Grey will return to the show.
