Despite having tremendously successful parents in the entertainment industry, Willow Smith has successfully carved out a creative identity of her own. However, her journey as an artist has not always been smooth sailing.

During a recent interview with Sirius XM’s Bevelations, Willow Smith opened up about feeling a “sadness that [she] didn’t know existed.” Thankfully, Willow stopped herself before heading down a “dark path.”

I saw the dark path I could have gone down. I think I kind of caught myself before my coping mechanisms started too early. I knew I needed to be a kid.

It is not uncommon for star kids to feel this way. Willow further expanded upon her thoughts, stating that she “had touched a sadness that [she] didn’t know existed.” and that she felt like “[she needed] to stop this before it [became] a darker, a darker place.”

Willow also added that while in her young mind, she realistically didn’t know what was the problem, she remembers just knowing that everything felt wrong.

However, Willow successfully overcame these feelings of darkness, and returned to her music career in 2015, when she released her debut studio album, Ardipithecus. She has also released a new album, “Coping Mechanism,” recently. Here’s hoping that she continues to flourish as an artist.
