Sony announced a release date for the new Karate Kid film, June 7th, 2024. The plot is not known at the moment. Even the original Karate Kid doesn’t know what the plot would be like.

Speaking to EW, Ralph Macchio says he had heard no new information about the new film. But he heard rumblings of some kind of new project before Sony broke the news, but as of right now, no one has contacted him about getting involved in the project.

“I know no other information, It’s too early to tell what that story is [with the movie]. This is all, like, happening in real time as you’re asking me this question.”

“I think that [will be figured out] in the near future, or I may have nothing to do with it,” he says with a laugh. “We’ll talk when I know what’s going on.”

Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz told a fan on Twitter that the cast and creative team from the Netflix series are not a part of Sony’s Karate Kid film.

The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well. #KarateKid #CobraKai

Cobra Kai is up for a sixth season, but with the success of the show, a renewal seems likely. Macchio believes that season six will happen due to the popularity of the show. However, the showrunners are busy with other projects. he joked that the young cast is getting older.

“We’re feeling pretty confident,” says Macchio. “People seem to love the show and it doesn’t seem like it’s slowing down. I think we’ll have the opportunity to let the stories evolve.”

“Hopefully, it’s not too long for the fans, None of us guys are getting younger”.

Macchio’s memoir, Waxing On, hits stores on October 18th. It should be a fun read. Hopefully, the new Karate Kid movie lives up to the franchise’s legacy.
