Grey’s Anatomy fans were delighted when Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo, the show’s original lovebirds, reunited at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim. Both of them were present to receive a very special award.
The pair will be awarded as two of the 14 new Disney Legends at this year’s expo during a special awards ceremony, which was hosted by Tamron Hall. Anthony Anderson, Kristen Bell, and the late Chadwick Boseman will also be honored in the ceremony.
As they stopped for a conversation on the D23 Expo red carpet on September 9th, Patrick and Ellen were spotted smiling and sharing laughter. Ellen wore a stunning purple dress, and Patrick had recently bleached platinum blonde hair and sported a stylish suit. Fans of the popular television series reacted to Variety’s video of the encounter and were delighted over the adorable exchange between the actors who played Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd.
On the red carpet, both celebrities engaged in solo interviews with Variety reporter Marc Malkin. Ellen discussed the upcoming Grey’s Anatomy season, in which she will only have a minor part and appear in eight episodes.
“There are stories left to tell. I just can’t tell them like I used to. The show is a formula that works and I just want to tell other stories.”
Patrick, however, looked back to the early 2000s when the first Grey’s Anatomy episode was being filmed. “I remember the Pilot, and I remember how much fun that first season was,” he said.
“And then how everything changed and steadily started to build, and then it becomes this huge success internationally and changed everyone’s life profoundly.”
The Disney Legends award honors those who have made noteworthy and lasting contributions to the Disney Legacy. Patrick, for his part, charmed fans as Amy Adam’s true love in the movie Enchanted in addition to appearing on the popular ABC drama for more than a decade. Of course, Ellen is being recognized for her contributions as a producer as well as her role as Grey’s Anatomy’s lead for 19 seasons and counting.
