Ken Griffey Jr. played in Major League Baseball for 22 years and spent most of his career with the Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds. He’s currently tied with Don Mattingly and Dale Long for having the most consecutive games with a home run.

MLB’s official Facebook page announced Griffey Jr. will be Team USA’s hitting coach for the World Baseball Classic in 2023. Griffey Jr. joins manager Mark DeRosa in trying to get Team USA another championship victory. In a press statement regarding the announcement, DeRosa expressed his excitement about having the legendary MLB player help the team.

I couldn’t be more excited to get in the fight with this group of men,. The wealth of knowledge, experience, and character that these guys will bring to our clubhouse will be vital to our success. March can’t come fast enough.

The World Baseball Classic will take place on March 8th through the 21st. Team USA aims to make it back-to-back championship victories after winning in 2017. When reacting to Griffey Jr’s inclusion, Team USA’s general manager Tony Regains called the legendary MLB star an “invaluable asset.”
