Tom Brady, who plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is arguably the most successful quarterback in NFL history. Due to “personal” reasons, Tom has been away from the Buccaneers’ extended training camp. The Buccaneers have now been urged to replace Tom with Lamar Jackson.

According to Bucs Wire’s Luke Easterling, the Buccaneers are a possible landing point for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson is in the final year of his rookie deal with the Ravens, and the two sides are now in contract negotiations. Easterling claims that Jackson “makes plenty of sense” as Brady’s replacement next year.

“Every day that Jackson doesn’t have an extension in Baltimore makes it more likely that this will end with both sides parting ways. If that happens, and Jackson hits the market next year, there will be no other team that makes more sense as a potential landing spot than Tampa Bay. They’ll still have a loaded roster ready to make another Super Bowl run, and replacing Brady with Jackson would extend that title window for a while yet.”

Jackson has already done so much in his young career. When he won the award in 2019, the South Florida native became the NFL’s youngest MVP. He’s also a two-time Pro Bowler, a former All-Pro selection, and has guided the Ravens to the playoffs in three of the last four seasons. On the other hand, the Ravens have yet to sign their franchise quarterback to a new contract, with Week 1 established as the deadline for contractual negotiations.

Baltimore is coming off an 8-9 season, with the Ravens finishing last in the AFC North in 2021. If the Ravens have another terrible season, it could lead to Jackson looking for greener pastures. As Easterling points out, the Buccaneers don’t precisely have a quarterback ready to step in and fill Brady’s shoes. Second-year quarterback Kyle Trask has yet to attempt an NFL pass, and he has yet to dethrone veteran Blaine Gabbert as Brady’s primary backup.

Back in May, Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen predicted that Trask would not be in competition for the backup quarterback role in 2022. Another interesting theory is that Jackson is being held back by the Ravens. ESPN analyst Steve Young recently stated that Baltimore’s offense isn’t maximizing Jackson’s passing ability.

“I can’t wait for someone to train Lamar Jackson in a sophisticated passing game. I think he’d be the greatest player in the history of the game. But he keeps getting held back by the Ravens year after year because they keep doubling down on this [rushing] thing Lamar Jackson is great at. No question, he’s the best at that. But that’s not the championship football they need to play. That’s not what Lamar Jackson wants to be.”

If Jackson believes that idea, especially if the Ravens struggle during the 2022 season, he may be searching for a new place to call home. Easterling brings up the Buccaneers’ vertical pass-heavy strategy as a selling factor for the young star quarterback.

“Tampa Bay’s offensive scheme is vertical-heavy in the passing game, which would finally give Jackson the opportunity to show off his prowess through the air. Between that scheme and the talented weapons Jackson would have at his disposal, it would also open things up for Jackson to take off running when necessary, still allowing him to be the dynamic playmaker he’s always been with the ball in his hands.”

The possibility of Jackson signing or being traded to the Buccaneers appears unlikely. However, a handful of great players, including Russell Wilson, Tyreek Hill, and Davante Adams, were unexpectedly traded to new teams this past offseason. If Brady departs after this season, there may be no better replacement than Jackson. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
