“Game Of Thrones” was a pop culture phenomenon that took the world by storm since its first episode back in 2011. “Game of Thrones” spinoff “House of the Dragon” is ambitious to draw in a sizable audience. George R.R. Martin, the author, hopes so because he wants it to be the beginning of a major series like “Star Wars” or the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A “Game of Thrones” prequel series called “House of the Dragon” recounts tales of the House Targaryen around 200 years before Danaerys first appears. It is the first spinoff of the popular series, and early reviews have been mixed. However, it’s only the first of hopefully many for Martin and the HBO staff.

The network reportedly created five potential spinoff ideas from Martin’s books and “Game of Thrones.” In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Martin said that he hopes that most potential spinoffs will be successful and expand the “Game of Thrones” universe to rival certain other well-known series.

How many shows will make it to air? I don’t know, but I hope the answer will be several. And we’ll have something akin to the Marvel or ‘Star Wars’ model by the time it’s all settled.

The author also acknowledged that it has been strange for him to be a part of the competitive aspect of trying to have these spinoffs developed and a universe built. All of the writers engaged to produce these rival scripts met with Martin to discuss their concepts and attempt to win his approval. HBO will premiere “House of Dragons” on Sunday, August 21.
