WNBA star Brittney Griner was convicted and sentenced on drug charges in Russia on the 4th of August. Griner has been sentenced to nine years imprisonment in Russia.

However, it seems that Griner is planning on challenging the conviction. As per reports, Griner formally filed an appeal against the decision made in her drug case.

Griner confessed that she was in possession of hashish oil in her luggage, while she was at the Moscow airport. However, she had also claimed that she had packed it inadvertently, and did not intend to break the law.

As of writing, there is no news regarding the grounds of Griner’s appeal, or when it will be heard in court. Alongside Griner’s legal team, the US is also making attempts to bring Griner back home, claiming she has been wrongfully detained.

While Griner has been detained in Russia since February, even President Joe Biden has also expressed his commitment to ensuring that Griner “can be with her wife, loved ones, friends and teammates” soon.
