Update: Netflix is not financing Johnny Depp’s next movie, but it will stream on Netflix in France.

Original: Johnny Depp missed out on acting for a couple of years as he dealt with the Amber Heard controversy. Now that he won his case and cleared his name, the star is already getting roles and offers. The Pirates star will reportedly star as France’s King Louis XV in his next movie project, and Netflix is ready to finance it.

Bloomberg reports that Netflix is financing the production of French actress/director Maiwenn Le Besco’s period drama. The film, called La Favorite, focuses on the lives of France’s King Louis XV and Madame Jeanne Bécu du Barry.

Johnny Depp will be fulfilling the role of the French king, while Le Besco plays Madame Jeanne, his third mistress. The mistress is famous in history books for getting executed because of her associations with the king.

The French studio that is producing the film revealed that it’s going to get a release sometime in 2023. The film will then debut on Netflix France approximately 15 months later.

Netflix joined French cinema organizations ARP, BLIC, and BLOC in an agreement. As per the deal, Netflix promises to invest at least 4% of the annual revenue in producing French and European projects, which La Favorite is a part of.
