Jeremy Giambi tragically passed away in February of this year. The former Major Leaguer committed suicide at the age of 47. Now, more details about the circumstances of his death have come to light.

TMZ reports that the medical examiner handling the case made a striking finding. While working as a pitching coach in August of last year, Jeremy Giambi had a freak accident. He was struck in the head with a baseball.

Giambi suffered a fractured zygomatic bone. Surgery was required to fix the issue. Witnesses in the medical examiner’s report said that Jeremy’s behavior changed instantly after the injury.

Giambi was said to have been very emotional. He allowed negativity to creep into his life. The witnesses said that even the smallest things could ruin his day.

Jeremy Giambi was paranoid and depressed after the accident. He saw a neurologist and had scans done to try and pinpoint the issue. No diagnosis was made.

Head trauma is known to cause similar behaviors in other athletes. There may be reason to believe that Jeremy Giambi’s suicide stemmed from his brain injury. The details from the medical examiner are sad, but they go a long way in helping to understand the final days of a great athlete we lost far too soon.
