Darius Lee had the whole world ahead of him. Lee was just 21 years old and a star on the Houston Baptist men’s basketball team. Tragically, he was gunned down in New York City on Monday.

TMZ reports that the NYPD said the shooting occurred at a barbeque in Harlem. They arrived on the scene after residents reported the sound of gunfire. There, they found nine people who had been shot.

Seven of the victims were male, two were females. One of them was Darius Lee. Houston Baptist University shared the sad news of his passing shortly thereafter. Head coach Ron Cottrell remembered Darius Lee in a statement shared via Twitter.

“We are devastated. Darius was a remarkable young man who loved the Lord, his mom, his family, his teammates, his friends and his entire HBU family…

As great of a basketball player as he was, he was an even better person. I can’t even think of basketball right now… I can only think of what a light Darius was during his short time on Earth. He was a joy to coach and we loved him so much.”

Darius Lee was Houston Baptist’s leading scorer last season and broke a school record with an astonishing 52-point performance against McNeese State. Our condolences go out to the friends, family, loved ones, teammates, and coaches of Darius in this incredibly difficult time.
