Game of Thrones was a big money-maker for HBO, but it finally ended. The original GOT series first premiered on HBO in 2011, later it went on to be one of the network’s biggest hits, acting as an adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s fantasy book series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Kit Harington has been cast in the first potential ‘Thrones’ project set after the events of the first series, reprising his fan-favorite character.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network has begun early development on its first sequel to its blockbuster fantasy drama. It will be a live-action spin-off series centered on fan favorite character Jon Snow. Kit Harington is also set to reprise his role.
For his portrayal of an action hero who tries to uphold his family’s moral beliefs in a terrible world, the actor received two Emmy nominations. Jon Snow learnt his true name was Aegon Targaryen, a potential heir to the Iron Throne, in the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones. He was expelled from Westeros in the series finale and joined the Wildlings north of the Wall to leave his former life behind.
Harington has starred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, co-starring in 2021’s Eternals, after concluding his work on Game of Thrones for eight seasons. He also just starred in the live staging of Henry V at the National Theater. On Game of Thrones, the actor was recognized for enduring some of the show’s most difficult filming, including the infamous 11-week winter night shoots in Northern Ireland during the final season.
In addition to the upcoming House of the Dragon prequel series, which premieres Aug. 21, this development news implies that there are now seven Thrones projects in the pipeline. Dragon is set around 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and depicts the narrative of a civil war inside House Targaryen. Three animated prequel projects are also in the works, one of which being The Golden Empire, which is set in the China-inspired land of Yi Ti.
