Jennifer Lopez needs no introduction. She is one of the most popular faces in the industry today. In a recent Netflix documentary, the superstar muses on her complex career and the pressures of living in the limelight.

In the Netflix film, Halftime, which was released earlier this month, the superstar opened up quite a lot about her childhood and her relationship with her mother.

“[My mother, did what she had to do to survive, and it made her strong, but it also made her tough,” Lopez said of her mother, now 76, in the documentary. “She beat the sh*t out of you.”

Lopez also shared that she had a “complicated” relationship with her mother as she went on to pursue a career in arts. “My mom was like, ‘If you’re gonna live in this house, you’re gonna get your education,’” the “On The Floor” singer recalled in the documentary, released on Tuesday, June 14. “We got into a bad fight one night and I just left.”

Lopez and Rodriguez have subsequently reconciled, and her mother also featured in the documentary to share her side. “I always had the highest expectations of them. It wasn’t to be critical. It was only to show you that you could do better,” the family matriarch shared of her daughters Jennifer, Leslie, and Lynda. “Jennifer, she gave me the hardest time, to tell you the truth. We butted heads a lot.”

Rodriguez also added, “I was far from the perfect mother. The one thing I can always say, everything I did, I did with their best interest at heart.”

Lopez also opened up about her dating history in the documentary. The singer recently got engaged to Ben Affleck for the second time and they have been going strong ever since. Watch the trailer of Halftime below!
