Elon Musk made a hard turn towards conservatism after allegations of sexual misconduct became public. The Tesla boss, who spent years positioning himself as an enlightened centrist, has since gone on several right-wing political tangents. Musk seems to have studied the playbook of firebrand celebrity Republicans like Donald Trump.

Musk recently took to Twitter to reveal that the first Republican he ever voted for was Maya Flores, who won a special election in the 34th Congressional District of Texas to flip the seat red after four decades of Democratic control. After calling for a massive “red wave” in 2022, Elon was asked who he supported for president.

While he has not committed to any candidate, Elon Musk said he was leaning towards Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis is famous not only for being a rubber stamp and public advocate for the policies of Donald Trump but for signing off on the controversial “Don’t Say Gay” law. The Governor has also waged an ongoing culture war against Disney.

Elon Musk recently announced massive downsizing at Tesla. Thousands of employees could lose their jobs. The news happened to coincide with his public coming out as a Republican.

Ron DeSantis could be a thorn in the side of the MAGA crowd as we approach the 2024 Republican Primary. Donald Trump has indicated that he intends to run again. One of his staunchest supporters doing the same could split the ticket. Elon Musk does not seem to be considering that thus far.
