Serena Williams was not expected to compete at this year’s Wimbledon tournament. After not playing anywhere after being injured during last year’s single’s draw, the All England Club has announced that Serena will take part in this year’s event. Williams is hoping to have a much better showing.

During the first set of her first-round matchup last year, Serena Williams’ legs buckled as she tried to chase a shot by her opponent. Williams was unable to continue. It was just her second mid-match retirement at a Grand Slam in her legendary career.

NBC News has reported that five British players will join Serena Williams as wild-card competitors. Serena will be making her comeback on the grandest stage of them all. The crowd should be firmly behind her after what happened last year.

Other women who earned a spot in the singles draw include Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, Sonay Kartal, Yuriko Miyazaki, and Katie Swan. Two other women are also expected to be added. Serena Williams is by far the most notable name on the list.

Before the announcement became official, Serena posted a photo of her signature white Nike tennis shoes on social media. That was followed by mainstream outlets picking up the news that she would be competing. Williams has been waiting a whole year for her shot at redemption.

The 2022 Wimbledon Championships kick off on June 20th. Serena is ready to get back out on the court. Her focus will be on winning an unprecedented 24th major tournament.
