There’s a wave of fear in India’s Punjab after a popular rap artist was killed near his home on Sunday. Sidhu Moosewala, who had recently contested India state elections, was gunned down by unidentified assailants. He was 28 at the time of his death.

Punjab’s chief of police VK Bhawra told reporters the rap star was ambushed near his home by the gunmen who emptied 30 rounds on Sindhu’s vehicle. The singer was struck by eight of the rounds. Another passenger in the car also succumbed to the injuries sustained during the attack.

“Today, a young Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala was gunned down in a state-sponsored murder. The AAP government is totally responsible for this,” Rolling Stone quoted a member of the ruling BJP as saying. Videos and photos of Sidhu’s lifeless body went viral on social media.

Sidhu shot to fame following the release of “So High” in 2017. The rap song, inspired by gangster lifestyle, featured Byg Bird. “So High” was acknowledged at the 2017 Brit Asia TV Music Award, winning Sidhu the Best Lyricist Award of the year.
