Hip-hop artists always live in a fear of their lyrics getting used as evidence to persecute them. Young Thug was arrested on multiple charges, and he is reportedly facing his worst nightmare in that regard.

The Atlanta rapper has been charged with conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) and participation in criminal street gang activity. Those bars he spit the whole time might be turned against him as well.

According to Rolling Stone prosecutors are using Young Thug’s song lyrics against him in his racketeering case. It was also noted, that the Thugger’s lyrics are in such a manner that the prosecutors are painting him as a violent gang member.

As you may know, Thug was listed in a 56-count indictment involving 28 YSL members which led to his arrest. The outlet specified, that lyrics from nine different songs were listed in that indictment, starting with 2014’s “Eww,” with the most recent being 2021’s “Ski” with Gunna.

Other lyrics included, were Thug’s 2018 collaboration with Nicki Minaj “Anybody” (“I never killed anybody but I got something to do with that body”), 2018’s “Just How It Is” (“Gave the lawyer close to two mil, he handles all the killings”), and 2020’s “Take It to Trial” (“For slimes you know I kill, trial, I done beat it twice, state, I’m undefeated like feds came and snatched me”). Obviously, the authorities have been a fan of Young Thug’s career for a minute.

Not only that, but Thugger’s social media posts were also listed in the case. The prosecutors alleged the rapper’s lyrics comprised of “an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy.”

Hip-hop lyrics have long been held against the rappers to prove guilt during criminal trials. Legends like Jay Z and others have proposed a bill to protect the artistic and creative freedom of rappers. The law will take time to come into existence as state legislation. Until then rappers will always have their lyrics used against them. As of writing, Thugger remains in custody.
