Dave Chappelle is best known for his satirical comedy sketch series Chappelle’s Show, which aired from 2003 to 2006. His jokes appear to have gone too far this time as the aftermath following his The Closer special is still in the air. The comic was not only attacked by an individual, but he was also chastised on social media for another transphobic joke.

According to Page Six, Dave Chappelle found himself in hot water after joking that the individual who attacked him on stage at a live event was a “trans man.” A number of outraged fans turned to social media to blast the comedian for what they saw as yet another clear display of transphobia.

A man armed with a fake gun stormed the stage during Chappelle’s performance in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday night, as part of Netflix’s ongoing ‘Is a Joke festival,’ and attacked the 48-year-old comedian in the middle of his routine.

Moments after security removed the intruder from the stage, Chappelle turned to his crowd and exclaimed, “It was a trans man!” while laughing about the situation. It didn’t take long for critics and detractors of Chappelle, who has already been chastised for his jokes about the transsexual and transgender communities, to turn to social media and call the comic out for yet another incident of transphobia.

“Chappelle gets attacked and… In video footage after the attack, Chappelle is seen to recover his composure and joke, ‘It was a trans man.'”

“Leave the trans community alone FFS – bullsh*t/words like this are why the trans community are the most victimised, assaulted and abused.”

“If you think I’m going to feel sorry for that transphobe Dave Chappelle, please don’t. The moment security protects him from the attack, he immediately jokes it was a transgender man (it wasn’t) – but it’s clear he will continue to put a target on trans people regardless.”

“Nothing about the Dave Chappelle attack is fun. The attack itself. The beatdown. The ‘trans man’ quip. The reaction on Twitter. It all just s*cks.”

The Los Angeles Police Department reported early Wednesday morning that the guy who stormed the Hollywood Bowl stage and attacked Chappelle was Isaiah Lee, a 23-year-old man. Lee was detained immediately for assault with a deadly weapon when police discovered a real blade inside the fake gun he used in the attack.

Chappelle’s “trans man” joke shortly after the attack and the reaction he received for it is only the latest instance of the comic making jokes about the trans community. Last year, the LGTBQ+ community demanded that the comedian’s Netflix special ‘The Closer’ be removed from the platform after a part of Chappelle’s act focused on and joked about the differences between the LGBTQ+ and black communities in American society.
