Dr. Dre is a rapper who is known for sticking to his guns when it comes to issues that concern him. Fans have probably noticed that legendary producer-rapper has also appeared in Grand Theft Auto. Dre recently made his thoughts public about the ever-trending game. Before he got involved with the game, Dr. Dre remarked that ‘Grand Theft Auto’ was a game for kids.
In an interview with BET, DJ Pooh highlighted Dr. Dre’s initial reservations about collaborating on a Grand Theft Auto game. Dr. Dre wasn’t interested in getting involved with the franchise when originally approached, according to DJ Pooh, who started working with Rockstar Games on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2004. When DJ Pooh made the proposal to Dre, he was not at all interested as he was not a gamer.
“Initially it was just no. But that’s the normal answers you get from Dre. I mean, I was surprised I got him to do The Wash [movie], but he had already promised me that so he couldn’t back out. But the answer was initially no because Dre’s not a gamer. He just didn’t play any of the games. It’s not like he dislikes them or something, he just didn’t play them. He was like I don’t make things for kids.”
Dr. Dre was eventually persuaded by DJ Pooh, who explained the game’s features and played Grand Theft Auto V at the producer’s Calabasas house. Dr. Dre then met with Rockstar executives, which led to his creating unique music for GTA and becoming a playable character.
“He needed to be fully integrated so that it made sense, and we wanted to make sure that his music had the impact it deserved. We asked ourselves, how can we integrate Dre into this experience at every level, and how can we get there in a way that makes it feel believable and fun? And so we literally built the game around him, not just his music.”
In December 2021, the Contract was made public. Dr. Dre’s thoughts have changed regarding the game. What are your thoughts? For further updates stay tuned to Thirsty.
