We are very sad to learn about the passing of NFL great Dough Sutherland. He was 73-years-old. No cause of death was noted at this time.
Minnesota Vikings confirmed Sutherland’s passing on Tuesday, April 5th as they announced that former star defensive tackle Doug Sutherland has passed away. He was 73 years old at the time of his death. Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf mourned the loss in a joint statement.
“Doug [Sutherland] was one of our proudest legends. His humble nature did not allow for him to talk much about his own playing career, but Doug was a key member of some of the best defenses in NFL history and three Super Bowl teams.
Doug was also the consummate teammate after football. He was one of the most active members of Vikings Legends events and didn’t miss a chance to help out at a community event or lend a hand where needed.
“Our thoughts are with Doug’s friends and family.”
The star player was drafted out of the University of Wisconsin-Superior by the New Orleans Saints in 1970, but spent the majority of his seasons playing for the Minnesota Vikings.
During the entire course of career, Sutherland participated in 164 games, compiling 29 sacks and recovering 4 fumbles. The Vikings, during his stay, won eight division titles and 3 NFL championships. He was named one of the franchise’s 50 greatest players in 2010.
