The highlight of the 2022 Academy Awards was Will Smith smacking Chris Rock over a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s baldness. Will Smith’s slap has divided the entire nation. While many slammed Will Smith for his actions, others supported him. However, this New York City Comedy Club is not afraid to take a firm stance on the matter.
Dani Zoldan, owner of Stand Up NY told TMZ why his management decided to tape up a message in their storefront window directly addressing the Will Smith-Chris Rock Oscars moment. Will’s actions have made the NYC comedy club put out the strict notice. Any kind of “Heckling and Physical Abuse of comics” is not allowed on their premises.
The club is ready to defend its talent at all costs, going as far as putting up a warning sign for those who wish to follow Will’s ways. This is a good way to pre-emptively stop would-be copycats who might now feel encouraged to act in rage following the Oscars slapgate.
Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. While presenting the award for Best Documentary, Rock quipped: “Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see you,” Jada Pinkett Smith announced last year she shaved her head after struggling with alopecia.
Will Smith’s anger over Rock’s joke was very apparent, especially as he began to yell “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth” after violently smacking Rock across the face. Will’s actions have been condemned by the Academy, LA Police, and many others in Hollywood. Will Smith issued an apology to Chris Rock on Instagram two days after the incident.
