The Los Angeles Police Department confirms to Variety that Chris Rock has “declined to file a police report” following an altercation with Will Smith at the 94th Academy Awards. The LAPD will be available to complete the investigative report if Chris Rock agrees to press charges.

According to Variety, full statement from the Los Angeles Police Department reads: “LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program. The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report.”

At the ceremony being broadcast from Los Angeles’s Dolby Theatre, Smith yelled at the comedian, telling him to “keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth” after smacking the comedian in the face. This was after because Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. While presenting the award for Best Documentary, Rock quipped: “Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see you,”

After winning best actor, Will Smith realized his mistake and apologized. In his award acceptance speech, Smith said he is hoping the Academy would invite him back. He hinted that his actions were out of love and a way of protecting his family, “Love will make you do crazy things.”
