Hugh Grant is known as a meticulous performer who approaches his roles like a character actor, working hard to make his acting appear natural. Hugh first appeared as the Doctor in a Comic Relief sketch in 1999 but declined when writer Russell T Davies asked him to reprise the role in 2007. The actor is in talks to return as the next Doctor Who in 2023, as the show celebrates its 60th anniversary.

According to a TV insider, Doctor Who may be getting a Marvel-style makeover with Hugh Grant as the TARDIS pilot. Russell T Davies, the showrunner, is resuming control of the science fiction series in time for its 60th anniversary in 2023. Davies wants the 61-year-old star of Four Weddings and a Funeral to “bring a fresh feel” to the role, according to the insider.

“He offers many attributes – great actor, British, award-winning, Hollywood A-lister and excellent at comedy. Conversations are in progress.”

Davies is also said to want to broaden the Doctor’s horizons. Davies is said to have the support of BBC Worldwide commercial and Sony Pictures TV, which recently purchased a majority stake in Wolf Studios, which produces the show.

“The vision is that the show can be a Marvel-like product, building franchises around the Doctor and other key characters in his many lives.”

“With the utmost respect to the BBC, in the past attempts like Torchwood were made on a very limited budget in locations around Wales. Now the world is Russell’s oyster.”

Davies was responsible for the Doctor’s return to the airwaves in 2005, after a 16-year hiatus, and for the show’s global success. When he left in 2009, Steven Moffat and, most recently, Chris Chibnall took over. However, ratings have deteriorated. Jodie Whittaker’s last shows as the 13th Time Lord will air this year before she and Chris depart.

Grant was nominated for a BAFTA in 2018 for his performance as politician Jeremy Thorpe in Davies’ mini-series A Very English Scandal. Let’s see if Hugh really is the next Doctor Who. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
