Emma Watson became a feminist icon almost by default when she was cast as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films at a young age. In recent years, Emma has taken a more active role in the fight for gender equality. Emma Watson appeared to make a dig at J.K. Rowling while onstage at the BAFTAs recently. This was following Rowling’s latest controversial comments about the transgender community.

The Harry Potter author has faced backlash in recent years for her controversial remarks about the transgender community and gender identity. One of the most recent tweets sparked outrage earlier this month when it referred to a legislative bill on International Women’s Day as “We Who Must Not Be Named Day.” After Emma took the stage at the BAFTAs on March 13, a few internet users couldn’t help but think that some of her remarks were directed at J.K. herself.

During the awards show, Rebel Wilson introduced Emma Watson as “calls herself a feminist, but we all know she’s a witch,” as she was presenting an award. “I’m here for all the witches,” Emma stated as she stepped up to the podium. Several Twitter users praised Emma for her choice of words immediately after the on-camera moment, with one person tweeting, “I love the shade Emma Watson just threw at JK Rowling at the BAFTAs.”

Another echoed the sentiment, writing simply, “Emma Watson is a queen for this.” A third added that Emma is the “feminist that we should all aim to be, inclusive, supportive and refuses to step on those more oppressed.”

Despite the fact that it was subtle, Emma’s fans have reason to believe she was addressing the author. In June 2020, she stated that “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.”

She isn’t the only Harry Potter star who has spoken out: Daniel Radcliffe responded with an essay the following month, after J.K. was accused of making transphobic comments on social media. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
