As you may know, Dua Lipa faced two back to back lawsuits, last week over her 2020 hit song, “Levitating.” A recent conversation with Lawyer in cases of infringement and plagiarism expertise reveal that the lawsuits might end up costing the 25-year-old singer millions of dollars.

The initial suit against Dua Lipa claims that she ripped off Artikal Sound System’s 2017 song “Live Your Life.” Whereas the second suit claims Lipa plagiarized the vocal melody from two of Brown and Linzer’s songs: 1979’s “Wiggle and Giggle All Night” and 1980’s “Don Diablo.”

To learn about the severity of the case, Vice had a conversation with Richard Busch, an attorney who specializes in copyright infringement cases. He made a name for himself when he won a $5 million infringement suit over Pharrell and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.”

Busch pointed out the second lawsuit from Brown and Linzer has more solid legal standing than the first and could get Dua Lipa in major legal trouble. Brown and Linzer argued that creators behind Dua Lipa’s song had reasonable access to their creation which claim Lipa plagiarized.

Mr. Busch said Dua Lipa and the team behind her song could be entitled to approximately $7 million to the plaintiff, is music scientist, if the musicologist confirms the piece was plagiarised.

We’re talking about $10 or $15 million, probably, in ultimate profits, depending on uses, sync licenses, concert revenue, and touring revenue. If a musicologist says the use [of Brown and Linzer’s song] is worth 50 percent, then you can do the math: They’d be going after 50 percent of the profit. I’m sure she’s not going to want to give that up. I’m sure the other writers and producers aren’t going to want to give up their share. But if the plaintiff says, “Listen, I’ll take $200,000,” then they’ll probably settle.

Either way, it’s a long battle in a court, and things aren’t looking good for the young singer. Given the nature of the case, the production team and the artist are sure to do their best to fight the legal battle.
