Guillermo Rigondeaux is considered one of the greatest amateur boxers of all time. The Cuban pugilist rose from those amateur ranks to some highly publicized professional bouts. Rigondeaux famously fought Vasiliy Lomachenko for the WBO junior lightweight title in 2017. A freak accident has left Rigondeaux with a severe loss of vision.

Manager Alex Bornote reported that the accident occurred while Guillermo Rigondeaux was at home cooking. A pressure cooker exploded. The aftermath left Rigondeaux with severely diminished eyesight. TMZ offered a translated quote via the El Nuevo Herald from Bornote on the incident.

“When the pot exploded and we saw how Rigondoaux was left, we thought the worst, because his face and eyes looked very bad as a result of the impact of the explosion.”

Guillermo most recently fought in Dubai on February 26, 2022, for the WBC International bantamweight crown. Rigondeaux lost to Vincent Astrolabio via unanimous decision. It may be the last fight of his professional career.

The injury could require surgery and a lengthy recovery process. Guillermo Rigondeaux is 41 years old and is short on time. Hopefully things don’t prove to be as serious as they initially look and he can get back in the ring soon. It doesn’t look promising at this time.
