Wayne Gretzky is someone people listen to when it comes to hockey. Gretzky is among the all-time greats of the game. The hall of famer is a true legend of his sport. When Wayne speaks, word travels fast.

Gretzky has used that influence to make a bold statement against Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Gretzky appeared recently on the NHL on TNT where he took a stand. The NHL great called the Russian invasion a “senseless war.”

Gretzky then called for the international hockey community to show their support. A ban on Russia competing in the prestigious World Junior Hockey Tournament was proposed. Wayne floated the idea while speaking for all of Canada.

“I think international hockey should say, ‘We’re not gonna let them play in the world junior hockey tournament. I think we got to, as Canadians, take that stance since the games are going to be played in Edmonton.”

Wayne Gretzky’s family is of eastern European descent. Gretzky said he has spoken to Ukrainians who are taking up arms to protect their cities. The scene has been a nightmare for innocent citizens of the war-torn nation.

Time will tell if the International Ice Hockey Federation makes any moves. Several teams who were set to face Russia in qualifying matches for the FIFA soccer World Cup have said they will refuse to play. It could be easier to just ban the Russians from competing in the first place.
