FIFA recently announced partial restrictions on the Russian soccer team with regards to their participation in the 2022 World Cup. The massive international event was trying to allow the team to compete without supporting the country’s criminal regime. Those restrictions have now become a full-on ban.

FIFA oversees all things regarding the World Cup. Earlier today, the organization announced a landmark decision that will ban Russia from playing in the tournament. The team has been completely disallowed from competing in Qatar.

FIFA’s announcement noted that both world and European officials have agreed to not allow Russia to participate. The Russian squad will be banned from all other FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice. The move comes in the wake of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

“FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.

Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.”

Russia had not yet qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the time of their ban. Several of their opponents in a qualifying tournament said they would refuse to play the Russian team. FIFA had no choice but to make the move in the face of a potential international boycott.
