Goldberg was suspended for two weeks from her talk show after making some insensitive remarks about the Holocaust, but now that she’s back, she’s supposedly more powerful than ever. Now that Whoopi Goldberg is back on The View, she feels like she’s on top of the world.
The EGOT winner and talk show host is said to have been strutting around the studio as her return from a two-week suspension coincided with the return of the viewers. When the panelist was semi-booted from the show, she took with her a significant portion of the audience.
During Whoopi’s absence, The View’s ratings dropped noticeably, which irritated Whoopi’s rival Meghan McCain, who seized at the chance to brag over the host’s ban. The View reportedly lost up to 283,000 viewers in the first full week that the host was absent.
“With Whoopi out from the show on suspension, the ratings dropped to the lowest in total viewers and key demos of the season. At the end of the day, TV is a business. The only thing that really matters is ratings.” The news seems to have gotten to Whoopi’s head. “She’s strutting around the place,” the source said. “She’s peacocking.”
Women aged 18-49 and 25-54 took the worst of the blow. Rating demographics is a strange concept. The number of watchers increased by 113,000 when Goldberg returned. She didn’t win back everyone who had jumped when she was banned without pay, but it was enough to restore the aggregate audience to 2.3 million.
This was the most significant week-to-week increase in the show’s history. Goldberg was enraged by the suspension and told employees she was going to leave the show after getting the short end of the stick, despite her on-air apology. During that moment, Goldberg discovered just how important she is to the show.
