Jamal Edwards, best known for founding the media platform SBTV. The platform helped many artists such as Ed Sheeran, Dave, Skepta, Wiley to launch their careers. Jamal helped grime music reach a global audience.

In a sad turn of events, Jamal has passed away. Jamal’s company confirmed the news of his passing to BBC News. As of now, the cause of death is still unknown. The British entrepreneur was 31 at the time of his passing.

SBTV kicked off in 2006 as a YouTube channel, which now boasts over one million subscribers and over a billion total views. Outside of his YouTube channel, Edwards worked as a director, author, DJ, entrepreneur, and designer. In 2014, he was awarded an MBE at the age of 24.

Many of Edwards’ peers have paid tribute to him on social media, including Jaykae and Lady Leshurr. Dave wrote “Thank you for everything, words can’t explain,” while Zane Lowe added, “Jamal Edwards was such a generous and inspiring person. Always gracious, he was a true pioneer.”

This is a very sad day and our thoughts are with Jamal’s family and friends at this time. His passing will certainly leave a void in the industry. RIP
