American Idol alum involved in a tragic news has surfaced yet again. The long-running singing competition series has seen its share of controversies over the years, but accusations have surfaced that Caleb Kennedy, 17, was engaged in a car accident in South Carolina that claimed the life of a man.

Kennedy auditioned for American Idol in 2021 and made it to the Top 5, but he has struggled since then since being booted off the show. Last year, a video showed Kennedy with another individual wearing a hood similar to the Ku Klux Klan surfaced, causing him to become embroiled in controversy.

In more recent news, PEOPLE claimed that Kennedy has been charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death. The individual who was killed in this incident has been named as Larry Duane, 54. He was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead, according to reports.

“A 2011 Ford pickup was traveling north on W. Murph Road when the vehicle traveled onto a private drive at 269 W. Murph Road and struck a building,” an officer informed PEOPLE. “A person inside the building sustained fatal injury as a result of the collision.”

The driver was identified as Caleb Andrew Kennedy, 17-year-old male from Roebuck, South Carolina. The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. There will be no further updates at this time. If the teen is found guilty, it is unknown what punishment he may face.
