The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Cinderella story ended before it could ever get started. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs ended Ben Roethlisberger’s career in resounding fashion last night before a wild Arrowhead Stadium crowd. It was likely the last game of Big Ben’s storied time as an NFL quarterback.

Pittsburgh hung with the Chiefs for most of the first half. They even led at one point after TJ Watt returned a fumble for a touchdown. Mahomes answered with touchdown after touchdown. In the end, the Chiefs offensive machine was too much for the Steelers. Kansas City took home a statement victory by a score of 42-21.

It was a passing of the torch from one NFL great to another. Mahomes dazzled with a line of 30/39 with 404 yards, 5 touchdowns, and one interception. The Patrick Mahomes era now has one less legend to compete with.

After the game, the two quarterbacks met and exchanged words. Cameras caught that conversation. Roethlisberger and Mahomes agreed to a jersey exchange. In the post-game press conferences, both men gushed about their opponent.

Respect can be difficult to earn in sports. Patrick Mahomes grew up watching Ben Roethlisberger compete in Super Bowls and brutal rivalry games. Patrick showed nothing but respect for a career that will go down as one of the greatest of all time.

The Chiefs won’t have too much time to rest on their laurels. The red-hot Buffalo Bills are coming to town. The Bills destroyed the New England Patriots in the wild card round. Patrick Mahomes will face another worthy foe in Buffalo QB Josh Allen.
