Jay Gruden is in hot water with football fans on Twitter after a comment he made sparked debate over the Washington Football Team’s name change. The franchise recently announced that they will reveal their new name and logo on February 2nd. Jay spoke about the change and found himself in a world of controversy just months after Jon Gruden was involved in a scandal over alleged racist emails.

The original name for the WFT was “Redskins.” Football Team officials agreed to make the change after sponsors, government representatives, and Native American advocacy groups pushed for the switch. Gruden told Sports Illustrated he doesn’t understand why the name was changed in the first place.

“I don’t want to ruffle any feathers. But they should’ve never changed the name in the first place.”

Feathers were certainly ruffled as fans took to the social media outlet of their choice to drag the former coach. The responses in support mostly read the same and appear to have largely come from bots. Many others were enraged over the statement.

Gruden began trending again in the wake of the controversy. Jay is rumored to be a target for the Carolina Panthers’ Offensive Coordinator position. The other name being thrown around is former Texans coach Bill O’Brien.

Jay Gruden’s comments will certainly be a point of questioning for any team looking to bring him in. The Carolina Panthers appear to have serious interest. Several other teams will at least kick the tires on Gruden. Time will tell if he is able to land a job after his short-sighted comments.
