A Connecticut high school hockey player has passed away from injuries he suffered during a recent game. Teddy Balkind had a freak accident while on the ice for St. Luke’s in Greenwich. Teddy was a sophomore on the school’s team.

Injuries in athletics are often afterthoughts for fans who just want their team to win at all costs. At the high school level, the danger of contact sports can affect entire communities. New Canaan, CT police confirmed the players identity in the wake of the horrible incident and offered their condolences to a suffering neighborhood.

TMZ Sports reported that Teddy Balkind fell to the ice during a recent game against Brunswick School. Another player was unable to adjust in time to stop and collided with Balkind. Teddy was taken to a nearby hospital but did not survive. Head of School Mark Davis made a statement regarding the awful event.

“Yesterday, we lost a precious young man in a tragic acciden. Both St. Luke’s School and Brunswick School are in shock as we work to support our students and families.
