The Bachelor takes a ridiculous premise and turns it into compelling reality television. Several strangers are picked to compete for the love of someone that they’ve never met. The short shooting period and large cast leaves precious little time for contestants to get to know the person they’re fighting over.

There is an occasional love story that comes from the series. The relationships end in short order more often than not. It is to be expected given the fact that the couples barely know one another. Sometimes, secrets emerge that render those relationships impossible. They also bring the credibility of the show itself into question.

Former Bachelor contestant Hannah Brown recently talked about one such secret. Colton Underwood went through the entire series knowing that he was a gay man. Hannah told Michelle Collins on her SiriusXM show that she and the other contestants knew all along.

“Yeah…I think a lot of the girls knew, I think. [We thought] ‘No, surely he’s not gay. He’s the bachelor.’ You’re like, ‘Okay, maybe he’s just not what we thought he was gonna be.’ You know? And that is the case a lot of times for reality TV.

You don’t really know the full person. And so I was like, ‘Oh, well I just misjudged [who] I thought I was going to meet,’ [and I was] trying to drop down the expectations, but it all makes so much more sense with just who he was and the mirage.”

Reality television shows such as The Bachelor are revenue generators first. Fans should have no illusions that ABC wants to find people true love. In this case, Colton Underwood seems to have been there for the exposure.

Reality TV junkies don’t seem to care, though. The show still gets great ratings and is cheap for the network to produce. Colton coming out as gay only adds to the intrigue for fans of the genre.
