Keanu Reeves admits that he was initially baffled when Lana Wachowski approached him about returning to The Matrix. The main reason behind his shock is the fact that Neo died in Revolutions.

The Matrix will return for the first time since 2003’s Revolutions in just under two weeks. The Matrix Resurrections will see a handful of characters return, including Reeves’ Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity. When The Matrix Resurrections and Reeves’ return were first announced in 2019, fans had similar reactions like Reeves.

Fans wondered that Neo died in Revolutions after freeing the humans, so how could he be back? Reeves shared his similar confusion as well. During a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show (via ComicBook.com), the actor recalled his first reaction to Wachowski reaching out about a potential Matrix return.

After his former shock, Reeves got immediately interested. He revealed that Wachowski won him over quickly with the story. Reeves revealed in the interview:

“I was at home, and I got a text from Lana Wachowski, the director and writer, and she was like, ‘What do you think about doing another Matrix film?’ And I went, ‘Oh, that sounds amazing, but I’m dead.’ And then she was like, ‘Are you?’ and I went ‘Do tell.” And she wrote a beautiful, beautiful script, a wonderful story, I think.”

Fans will also get their answers soon. The Matrix Resurrections arrives in theaters and on HBO Max later this month. Promos efforts have been well curated not to reveal too much about the plot or the characters, making this one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
