The Weeknd can now claim he’s got the greatest song of all time. At least, if Billboard’s Greatest Songs of All Time Hot 100 Chart is your measure. The song “Blinding Lights” was named the greatest song in the history of the publications Hot 100 chart.

The Toronto-based singer talked to Billboard about the achievement. He said he’s glad the timing was right for the track. He was already ten years into his music career when the song dropped.

“I’ve always been tinkering with the [sounds of the] ’80s. It was much more subtle before, but I’ve always wanted to completely dive into it. And 10 years in, I think I’ve earned it.

“[There were] songs that transcended into pop culture, like “The Hills.” But by the time “Blinding Lights” happened, I was 10 years into my career and established as a music figure in the industry already. So I’m glad “Blinding Lights” happened when it happened as opposed to it being the first single I’ve ever dropped. That’d be scary for me. I don’t think [the success of “Blinding Lights”] has hit me yet. I try not to dwell on it too much. I just count my blessings, and I’m just grateful.”

In addition to the big Billboard news, The Weeknd‘s new series “The Idol” was recently picked up by HBO. The show tells the story of a rising pop star who gets involved with a mysterious L.A. club owner. Ultimately, the entrepreneur turns out to be a cult leader.

“Blinding Lights” spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track broke a record previously held by Chubby Checker’s “The Twist.” The Weeknd’s song spent 90 totally weeks on the chart.
