Bruno Cappelozza recently won a million-dollar purse in a fight, only to learn that his father died just before. Now, details are emerging that suggest that Bruno’s family kept the death a secret so he could stay focused and win the PFL Heavyweight World title.

Dave Meltzer, who covers MMA and professional wrestling, talked about the details on a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio. Meltzer said that the Cappelozza’s story generated a lot of interest.

“There was a huge human interest story in the heavyweight fight. Bruno Cappelozza won the million dollar champion and then he was told that his father died. Apparently, his father died on Sunday and they kept it from him, because they did not want to distract him from this fight.”

The event also featured the second professional MMA bout of Claressa Shields. Shields became notable after the fight when Jake Paul mocked her loss on social media. Shields recently shaded Paul about a potential fight between the two, saying she would knock him out with one punch.

The Professional Fighters League 2021 Championship event took place last night. Bruno Cappelozza captured the million-dollar prize after defeating Ante Delija by unanimous decision after going the full five rounds.

Bruno improved his professional record to 14 wins and 5 losses. The Brazillian fighter’s team strategy of keeping him in the dark apparently worked, as the focused fighter took home PFL’s top prize.
