To infinity and beyond! That’s where Disney and Pixar are hoping the box office numbers for their upcoming Buzz Lightyear origin story are heading.
The company dropped the first teaser trailer for the upcoming blockbuster kid’s flick. The film is not the origin story of the Buzz Lightyear character we’ve grown to know over the years. Instead, Lightyear tells the story of the human Buzz that the toy is based on. It was enough that the film’s director felt the need to elaborate to Entertainment Weekly.
“Another way to get at it, it’s a straightforward sci-fi action film about the Buzz Lightyear character. In the Toy Story universe, it would be like a movie that maybe Andy would have seen, that would have made him want a Buzz Lightyear figure. The movie doesn’t end and then you see Andy eating popcorn. This is its own thing… This is standalone. It’s the Buzz Lightyear movie. It’s that character but as the space ranger, not as the toy.”
It’s an intriguing idea. Chris Evans offered his voice talent to play the role of the titular Buzz Lightyear. The trailer’s got David Bowie music so be prepared for Starman to get stuck in your head. The director wanted to put an emphasis on action, so this is a brand new take. There’s a lot to digest in the short teaser, but we’re loving it.
The character is voiced by Tim Allen in the Toy Story universe. It will be interesting to see a new take on the third-wall busting space cadet toy.
Lightyear will premiere on June 17, 2022. Release dates have been shaky for Disney lately, so that might change over time.
