Ben Simmons’ name racks up a ton of controversy at this point, and for good reason. Now he is reportedly telling his team that he just doesn’t have it in him to mentally play.

The 76ers suspended Simmons and this was quickly followed by him putting his $5 million home up for sale. Now he has the desire to play, but he doesn’t know if he has the ability at this time.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Ben Simmons informed the 76ers that he’s just not mentally able to play basketball for them. We are uncertain about any specifics regarding this situation, because it is such a new story.

Ben Simmons spoke to Doc Rivers, Joel Embiid and entire 76ers team today and accepted everyone needs to take responsibility, including himself — but Simmons informed them all that he’s not mentally ready to play yet and needs time.

Simmons reported to shootaround today ahead of Nets game and was seen engaged around the team, sources said. The three-time All-Star has expressed he wants to play but isn’t prepared mentally.

Simmons was thrown out of 76ers practice and then promptly suspended. That is not the position he wanted to be in at all, but he finds himself in a very difficult situation. We’re hoping for the best, especially if he is going through some mental issues at this time.

Keep checking back with Thirsty as we continue covering this ongoing story. Obviously, there is a lot to unpack in this situation.
