The Suicide Squad is out in theaters now, and a lot of people are focusing on the box office numbers, and they aren’t amazing. Then again the Delta Variant of COVID-19 is causing a lot of people to stay indoors. HBO Max is another big reason why fans didn’t flock to the cinema for the James Gunn soft reboot of the franchise.

The new DC film drew just $26.5 million at the box office from 4,002 North American theaters, according to Variety. While many focus on that number as disappointing, HBO Max saw a real surge thanks to the flick.

According to HBO Max chief Andy Forssell, the film stacked up as the “second most viewed film over an opening weekend on HBO Max since we began day-and-date releases with theaters.”

Mortal Kombat is believed to hold the number one spot, but he didn’t directly confirm that assumption. The video game franchise reboot dropped in April and only made $41.1 in theaters, $23.3 of that came on MK’s opening weekend.

We’ll have to see how The Peacemaker series goes on HBO Max, but the Warner Media streaming service seems to be very happy with those numbers despite the lackluster box office stats.

Years of experience in writing, journalism, and digging exclusive insider info for Ringside News opened the door for a new opportunity for Jenkins. With a history in finance, he broke into the journalism game by writing on blogs and other freelance websites before branching into sports and entertainment news. Being in tune with pop culture doesn't mean it has to make sense, but he tries. Favorite bands include any group from Seattle who formed between 1991 and 1999. 5 Ozzfests under his belt and 12 Warped Tours, but his last concert was a bluegrass AC/DC cover band that was not 100% terrible.
