2016’s Suicide Squad film was written and directed by David Ayer. Despite being a Box Office success, grossing over $740 million at the worldwide box office. the film was panned by both fans and critics. The Suicide Squad, the franchise’s 2021 soft reboot has received a much different critical reception with 93% fresh ranking on Rotten Tomatoes.

This ultimately led to James Gunn taking charge of The Suicide Squad which was said to be a ”soft reboot” of the 2016 film. The film stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, John Cena as Peacemaker and more.

John Cena is also set to star in a spinoff based on his Peacemaker character. Many fans were highly impressed with Cena’s portrayal of the Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad and now it seems more details regarding the upcoming spinoff has been revealed.

While speaking to Variety, James Gunn talked about the upcoming Peacemaker spinoff. He was asked about the post-credits scene in The Suicide Squad and how it would tie into the spinoff. Gunn revealed that the TV series will be taking place both in the past and present.

“Well, through the story, you learn where Peacemaker came from. There’s a moment in the movie where Bloodsport talks about his father and what his father was like, and you cut to a shot of Peacemaker, and Peacemaker nods. That’s the seed of the entire “Peacemaker” series. So we get to see Peacemaker with his father, who’s played by Robert Patrick, where he came from, what he’s done, what that means to him, and where he’s going after all of this. Because he’s not an evil person, he’s just a bad guy. He seems sort of irredeemable in the film. But I think that there’s more to him. We didn’t get a chance to know him [in “The Suicide Squad”] in the way we get to know some of the other characters. And so that’s what the whole show is about. I needed eight episodes to do it, at least.”

The Peacemaker spinoff series will be releasing in January of next year and will be 8 episodes in length. We will have to wait and see just how good the spinoff will turn out to be.
