Jason Momoa left his work on HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones behind him. The actor has moved onto bigger projects such as DC’s Justice League, Aquaman and even the upcoming Dennis Villeneuve’s Dune. That doesn’t stop questions about his former role on the series.

Momoa’s Khal Drogo succumbed to death on screen more than 10 years ago. A scene where his character raped his new bride, Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen, stood out as controversial as well. In fact, it still prompts questions to this very day.

As he was interviewed on The New York Times, he was hit with the heavy question about feeling “differently today about those scenes” and if he has any regrets attached to it. Momoa had quite an answer for the outlet.

Well, it was important to depict Drogo and his style. You’re playing someone that’s like Genghis Khan. It was a really, really, really hard thing to do.

Momoa also pointed out that he didn’t have a say in the matter. He wasn’t playing the role as a superstar, but a modestly paid actor at the time. So, he couldn’t refuse to participate in the triggering scene.

My job was to play something like that, and it’s not a nice thing, and it’s what that character was. It’s not my job to go, ‘Would I not do it?’ I’ve never really been questioned about ‘Do you regret playing a role?’ We’ll put it this way: I already did it. Not doing it again.

Jason felt like he was unexpectedly hit with a question which didn’t sit right with him. So, he confronted the interviewer about it.

When you brought up ‘Game of Thrones,’ you brought up stuff about what’s happening with my character and would I do it again. I was bummed when you asked me that. It just feels icky, putting it upon me to remove something, as if an actor even had the choice to do that.

The Aquaman star then explained that such scenes happen because there are writers and directors calling the shots, and he was in no position at the time to have any substantial say about things.

We’re not really allowed to do anything. There are producers, there are writers, there are directors, and you don’t get to come in and be like, ‘I’m not going do that because this isn’t kosher right now and not right in the political climate.’ That never happens. So it’s a question that feels icky. I just wanted you to know that.

Momoa is currently shooting for Aquaman 2, where he will re-enact his role as The King Of Atlantis. He’s also set to appear in the upcoming sci-fi epic Dune, based on Frank Herbert’s legendary series of the same name.
